What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, disadvantaged producers and workers, especially in the South.  Principles that guide peoples work in Fair Trade are:

• Creating jobs for people who usually aren’t hired
• Caring for the environment
• Helping artisans and producers build their business capacity and grow their business over time
• Gender equality with an emphasis of providing meaningful employment opportunities for women
• Building sustainable, long-term relationships between trading partners
• Supporting good working conditions
• Educating people about Fair Trade and encouraging them to get involved.
