Global Gifts Promotes Earth Day in Indianapolis

Global Gifts is proud to celebrate Earth Day April 22 through April 26.  During that time the many items found in our stores made from recycled material will be 20% off.   In addition, customers will learn how fair trade is also sustainable trade that respects the environment.

“Our world is facing some very real and daunting environmental challenges” said Sam Carpenter, general manager for Global Gifts.  “As a fair trade business, we are responsible for doing all we can to run our business in a sustainable way” said Carpenter.

Global Gifts has taken several steps to ensure environmental sustainability in our products and practices:

Products

  • Numerous products in our stores are made from recycled material: including metal art made from old oil drums; bowls, trivets, and coasters made from recycled newspaper; jewelry made from recycled glass and aluminum cans; and bracelets made from flip flops that have washed up on the shores of the Indian Ocean.

  • Global Gifts buys from artisans who use fast growing sustainable materials such as bamboo, jute, kaisa grasses for weaving, and more.

  • We avoid buying any products made from old growth or slow growing trees, ivory, natural coral or other items that would be harmful to the planet.

  • Global Gifts sells a large variety of organic and fair trade coffees, teas, and chocolate.

  • Nonpolluting natural dyes are used in materials whenever possible.

Practices

  • Global Gifts recently signed up to receive100% of our power through Indianapolis Power and Light’s Green power program which uses sustainable energy sources.

  • Global Gifts minimizes trash by recycling or reusing all shipping and packaging products it receives.

  • Global Gifts is introducing our new cotton shopping tote.  Customers, who use the tote instead of one of our shopping bags, will get a free piece of organic fair trade chocolate.  It’s “Bag or Chocolate”.

“Global Gifts has made a real commitment to environmental sustainability as part of our fair trade mission and we continue to search for ways to lessen our environmental footprint” said Carpenter.
