An estimated 50,000 people participated in more than 200 events taking place throughout North America during Fair Trade Fortnight (May 3-18).  All this was done in the spirit of fair trade which provides hope and opportunity for a better life for millions around the globe.

What is World Fair Trade Day?

World Fair Trade Day will be celebrated in 70 countries to promote the benefits of fair trade.  Fair trade goods provide employment, improved living conditions, dignity and justice to impoverished communities around the world.  By offering a fair price, credit assistance, long-term working relationships, healthy working conditions, gender equality and environmental sustainability, fair trade provides hope and opportunity to millions across the globe.  Fair trade has proven to be an effective and efficient development strategy that works to counter exploitation of vulnerable workers, extreme poverty and lack of resources in developing countries.  Fair trade enables developing world artisans and producers to send their children to school, provide adequate food and housing for their families, and receive improved health care.
